(WJBK) -

A 10-year-old girl is suing her mother's ex-boyfriend in attempts to get her pet dog back.

Hannah Wise and her mother, Adrienne Lenhoff, say Mitchell Rechter won't return a poodle named Mystery since the girl and her mother moved out of his home last spring.

Hannah explained at a story-telling event Friday night at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History that Rechter agreed to take care of the dog while she and her mom got settled in a new home, and that she was allowed to come visit the dog during that time. Now, they say, Rechter won't give up the dog.

Fox 2 received video of Hannah telling her story at the event, which she concluded saying, "The lesson I learned was that when you really get to know someone and fall in love with them, don't give them your full heart. Hide a piece of it so in case they break you won't be left alone." She said when she first met Rechter she thought he was a "great, genuine person."

The Associated Press reports Rechter's lawyer Jonathan Jones says the dog was abandoned by Hannah and her mom. He says Rechter is attached to the pet and wants to keep it.

Isom attempted to receive a comment from Rechter, who did not respond.

"There's a 10-year-old child that's acting more grown up than a 54-year-old man," Lenhoff tells Isom.

UPDATE NOV. 22: The dog has been returned to Hannah and her mother.
