Need a Lyft? Ride-sharing app takes off in Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Have you seen those cars that have a pink mustache on the grill? They're an essential part of using Lyft, one of the fastest growing rideshare app in the country.

Chicago's newest and friendliest way to get around is cheaper than a taxi and more social. Lyft calls its service, "Your friend with a car, when you need it."

There are several ride share applications available these days. People who use them say one day, you won't be hailing taxicabs on the street. It will all be done by mobile phone.

Drivers are background checked, their driver's record is reviewed, their cars are inspected and there's even a $1 million liability insurance policy. Passengers provide information, too, for billing. The app uses Facebook accounts to connect.

The pink mustache on the grill or dashboard is how users identify the car that's assigned to pick them up. Some drivers customize their cars or offer candy, snacks or bottled water for the ride.

Mary Jeske is a Chicago mother of three who started driving because she was in between jobs. She likes it so much, she decided to stick with Lyft.

Lyft started in San Francisco in 2012, and has already provided a million rides. It came to Chicago in May. Lyft is in 18 cities across the country.
