2 Oakland Univ. basketball players rejoin team after rape allegations

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

The head basketball coach at Oakland University, Greg Kampe, has allowed two basketball players to rejoin the team after allegations of sexual misconduct at a Los Angeles area hotel room. The players were initially suspended indefinitely from the team, but have been reinstated after two games.

Fox 2's Taryn Asher spoke with the players, Duke Mondy and Dante Williams. She reports the two would not elaborate on the situation, but what is known is that police did not have enough evidence to charge Mondy and Williams and the two were released. The university then conducted its own investigation reaching the conclusion that the players had a female in their room, which was against the rules, and also violated curfew - but did not commit a crime.

"You just have to be careful. We didn't know the young lady; that was our first time meeting her. So you've got to be careful who you communicate with, who you get yourself involved with. Like Dante said, ... the world in your hands can be gone just like that," says Mondy.

Asher also spoke with the coach, who says he will treat this as an education experience for both the players and the whole team.

"I could sweep them away. I could tell them you're out of here, or I can bring them back and use it as educational moment for them and for our team and that's what we've chosen to do," Kampe tells Asher.

Kampe says the two players have begun practicing again with the team this week. They will head to South Carolina for the Maui Invitational, but the coach says he still has not made up his mind yet if the two will play.

"They practiced today; they will make the trip and they'll be there. Whether I play them or not - I'll make that decision in the moment of the game," Kampe says.

"It's been tough. We made a mistake and we were wrong, and we have to go about it and be positive about the situation and bring positivity back this university," says Williams.

BELOW IS THE NEWS RELEASE SENT FROM OAKLAND UNIVERSITY:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DUKE MONDY AND DANTE WILLIAMS REINSTATED
The two men's basketball players will join the team immediately.
       Nov. 20, 2013

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland basketball players Duke Mondy and Dante Williams  will rejoin the team, announced head coach Greg Kampe  on Wednesday. Mondy and Williams served a two-game suspension for contests at Cal and No. 15 Gonzaga for violation of team policies.
The university conducted an internal review of the incident that occurred on the recent west coast trip, and it was confirmed that no crime was committed.
"I am at issue with the moral connotations of what occurred, but I work at a public institution where diverse beliefs and ideals are accepted," said Kampe. "It is the consequences of their actions while representing this university that must be addressed.
"It is my belief that the word coach and teacher are synonymous, and I intend on making this a learning experience for the two student-athletes involved and the rest of the team. The entire team will be going through a series of behind-the-scenes workshops and training sessions to address not only this incident, but also additional life skills. The mission of this basketball program is and always has been to educate student-athletes, and that education process needs to be in addition to academics."
Mondy and Williams began practice with the team today. Both players and Coach Kampe are available for comment after practice on Thursday (approximately at 11:30 am).
