A father at Scotch Elementary in West Bloomfield openly carried his firearm on the school's property earlier this month. He recorded video while walking around the school to see what the reaction from parents would be.

His video showed no objections, but did show several parents asking if what he was doing, openly carrying a weapon in a gun-free school zone, is legal. The video then shows the man explaining that those who hold a concealed pistol license (CPL) are allowed to open carry in gun-free zones. CPL holders are not, however, allowed to conceal their weapons in gun-free zones, he explains.

Fox 2's Erika Erickson spoke with Mike Patton, West Bloomfield Chief of Police. He says, after reviewing the video, he agrees the father was abiding by the law.

Chief Patton describes open carry as: "A weapon in a holster or otherwise very openly displayed. It would no longer be considered open carry if an item of clothing, like a jacket, was to conceal it."

Chief Patton adds, "There is perhaps a bill pending in the legislature with a reviewing to try and make school premises true gun-free zones, that would perhaps not only prohibit concealed carry but also open carry on the school premises."
