Only On FOX: Wawa Worker Says He Was Fired For Fighting Back

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

We've shown you this dramatic video of an overnight worker fighting off an attacker wearing a bizarre disguise.

You might wonder if you would have the courage to do the same thing. But this employee's bravery was not rewarded.

Now, that employee is talking about what happened right after the attack.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reported live from Center City on Friday night that the employee says he was fired for fighting back.

We showed you the video Thursday of Wawa employee Brandon Burwell decking a would-be robber, knocking him to the ground.

"I kind of just threw my best punch out there. It was a right to the jaw," Burwell said.

But now, in an exclusive interview, the 24-year-old tells us he was fired and told, "You failed to comply with our company's policies."

Burwell says he received a termination notice from Wawa a couple of weeks after the attack, saying company policy requires employees to cooperate and comply with the robber.

The customer service associate with a contagious smile says he loved his job.

"I love helping people every day, and I got to do that on a regular basis," Burwell said.

He says he wanted to protect the store but admits he disregarded the company's policy.

"If somebody asks you for money from the register, you're supposed to give it up immediately," he said.

But Burwell claims he wasn't convinced that the man who walked in at 5:36 a.m. – with a green towel on his head, sunglasses and kitchen gloves – was a true threat or the average panhandler asking for cash.

"He's like, 'Do you see what I have in my shirt here?' And he does it about two or three times. And the whol time I'm like, I have no idea what this guy has. 'You have to show me a gun, or I cannot give you this cash,'" Burwell said.

He added, "I figured, you know, maybe I can employ some sort of stop-loss prevention and maybe scare this guy out of the store, as opposed to just immediately giving up the money."

Police say the suspect wasn't scared and instead he went after the employee with a thin piece of metal.

At that point, Burwell claims he acted in self defense and on instinct, pummeling the suspect to the ground.

We reached out to Wawa for a comment. A spokesperson responded, saying, "We take every matter in our stores seriously, but as a policy we do not comment on any associate matters or ongoing police investigations."

In the meantime, police say the would-be robber in this case remains at-large. He apparently took off in a dark-colored BMW X5. Anyone with information should call Philadelphia police.
