Police Say Stolen Car Involved In Deadly Wreck

Posted: Updated:
Northeast Philadelphia -

Police say the 21-year-old driver of a stolen Mazda slammed into a U-Haul and lost his life.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether the man in the Mazda stopped on Princeton before crossing Summerdale. Frank Acosta says he witnessed the wreck.

"It was horrifying. I'm still shaking," said Frank Acosta. "He looked both ways, went to cross and they  just collided together it was an impact I can't explain."

Saturday morning's crash in Northeast Philadelphia is an all too familiar sight for residents living near the intersection.

I used to call 911 every single time they crashed  but I stopped. It's like every single day they were crashing," explained Adrian Abonce.

Residents say the area is littered with reminders of accidents past.

They say a bumper is still lingering  around from an accident on Friday night.

Tire tracks have scarred the grass from another  wreck last week.

Myrna Freedman says a new utility pole had to be put up in her yard after a recent crash knocked down the old one.

This morning she  came home to another crash in her yard. Proof she says a traffic signal or 4-way stop sign is needed.

"Years ago we tried petitions we tried to do what we could do
but nothing ever happens," explained Freedman.

For now residents have to settle for the two way stop signs and the warning beneath them, letting drivers know crossing traffic doesn't stop.

Many of the Northeast residents now wondering if Saturday morning's  tragedy is going to trigger change.

"I  always said someone's going to have to die before they do something and that's what happened this morning," lamented Arlene Olson.
