Thanksgiving Day arson fire at Heidelberg Project

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The latest suspected arson fire at Detroit's Heidelberg Project came in the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day. A security guard saw a man running from one of the buildings before it went up in flames around 5am. The suspicious person got away.

The fire destroyed what was known as The War Room. Over the last seven months, a string of arson fires have destroyed several buildings in the 27 year old art installation. In May and October, a fire claimed the Obstruction of Justice house; in early November the House of Soul, covered with vinyl records, was leveled; and just last week, the Penny House which was being renovated also burned to the ground. Now only four of the original seven structures remain.

My thought is they need to be caught," said Betty Guyton, mother of the projects' artist Tyree Guyton. "They're going to injure somebody and they're not going to get over that. It's just a pity you know. Why? Why do this?"

Tyree Guyton has said the fires will not stop him and only make him more determined to work on the project. Arson investigators are working with the US Dept. of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to catch whoever's responsible. A fundraising campaign is underway to provide more security.

A spokesperson for the project says security at the site will be increased immediately.
