CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An eight-year-old boy was run over by a float during a holiday parade Friday night in northwest suburban Crystal Lake.

The boy was riding on the float on North Williams Street between east Woodstock and Brink streets about 7:52 p.m. as a participant in Crystal Lake's annual Festival of Lights Parade, according to a release issued by Crystal Lake police.

The boy tried to get off the float to follow an adult who was passing out candy to attendees, police said.

In the process of trying to get off of the float, the boy became entangled with a rotating tire and fell to the ground, at which point the float--which consisted of a flatbed trailer towed behind a truck--rolled over the lower part of his body and injured him, police said.

The driver stopped immediately upon realizing something was wrong and proceeded to back the float off of the boy, police said.

The boy was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Citations are not expected to be issued in the incident, police said.
