Amazon Drones? It Could Happen!

Posted: Updated:

You know how you travel up and down streets and right along with you are FedEx, UPS and other delivery trucks. Okay, now imagine looking up and little unmanned aircraft, we'll call the "drones" are doing the same thing. That's what Amazon is talking about doing with it's "Amazon Prime Air" service. The big retailer says most packages are under 5 pounds and so drone delivery would be doable.

Walt Ferar is a drone hobbyist. He builds his own to hold cameras. He's a photographer and loves what he can do with aerial photography. It's cheaper than getting up in a helicopter he says and more fun. But, right now he can't make any money that way. That's because the law allows for drones for hobbyists or public agencies but you can't make money using them.

Ferar says a company like Amazon has the resources to fund a campaign to change the law, but he wonders about the liability that they could face if a drone or a package fell. He says things happen. He's had a propeller on a 3 prop drone go bad and in a case like that the drone falls.

Clearly, safety will be an issue as Amazon and the FAA look at the commercial use drones, but there's no doubt with a company the size of Amazon a big noise has been made and the federal officials may have to listen.
