Metro-North derailment survivor recounts ordeal

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Four passengers were killed and more than 60 injured when a commuter train heading to Manhattan from Poughkeepsie derailed Sunday morning near the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.

One of the injured who was also one of the first to be rescued from the train was Dr. Joel Zaritsky, a dentist from Poughkeepsie who was on his way to the Javits Center in Manhattan for a convention.

His family, who usually makes the post-Thanksgiving trip with him, decided to stay home.

"My daughter was getting ready to go back to college… my son said he had too much homework to do," Zaritsky told Good Day NY.

Zaritsky says he's lucky to be alive. As for why this all happened, the dentist says not certain but does point to one thing.

"I didn't hear any breaks. I felt the car come off the tracks… the car started to veer to the right.  I could see at a very high speed the gravel and ground come towards my head to my right side.  I ended up smashed on the right side wall," said Zaritsky.

The train was hurtling at 82 mph as it entered a 30 mph curve, a federal investigator said Monday. But whether the wreck was the result of human error or brake trouble was still unclear, he said. Asked why the train was going so fast, National Transportation Safety Board member Earl Weener said: "That's the question we need to answer."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
