Patty Jackson's Dental Journey

Patty Jackson's Dental Journey

PHILADELPHIA -

Many more people are opting for rather expensive implanted teeth over traditional, removable dentures.

FOX 29 took an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how premium implants are made in this follow up report on a local celebrity who needed a major repair to her smile.

We joined Patty Jackson's journey about a year ago, when this nationally syndicated radio host was at the height of an out-of-control case of gum disease, tooth decay, and rapid bone loss that left her mouth in shambles, her speech impaired, and her health very much in danger.

Doctor Adam Craven stopped the rampant infection and removed a number of teeth. Then, he sent her to doctor Thomas Balshi, known for rebuilding celebrity smiles using hi-tech titanium implants.

The cost of Patty's new teeth, which was both cosmetic and functional, would be more than she expected. She underwent hours of surgery removing all teeth and a lot of gum and bone. Patty walked away with a full set of very real-looking non-removable dentures, but her journey wasn't over yet.

The high quality teeth that Patty Jackson had been flashing for months were plastic temporaries. It kept the high profile DJ in business, while bioengineer Stephen Balshi got to work using a host of models and computer graphics.

Balshi designed the size and fit of each and every one of Patty's permanent crowns, with no room for the slightest error. He made porcelain or dental ceramic teeth for the top, and a stronger acrylic set on the bottom.

"We use the analogy of two glass hammers banging together over and over again," he explained.

His order was filled at Nobel Biocare just outside New York, a milling facility known around the world for its quality and precision.

Once Dr. Craven implanted Patty's new teeth, the results were fantastic and everyone was happy, especially Patty herself.

"I think you have to make an investment in your life. I'm 50 years old now and for the rest of my life these are going to ride out with me."

Implants are not care-free. Patty must maintain regular dental checkups, wear a nightguard and drop the salt water taffy.

Patty Jackson's procedure cost more than $50,000, but the doctors say average cases typically can range from a few thousand dollars to more than $100,000. See her appearance on Good Day by clicking on the link to the right.
