Pike Nurseries' Melodie McDanal will shows you how to spruce up their space and decorate with garland and wreaths.

• Types of Garland

    Fresh Garland:

     Cedar Garland

    • Cedar garland is the easiest type of fresh garland to use for the mantel since it is relatively flat and spills over the edge of mantels

    Mixed Cedar Garland

    • Very nice garland that has berries mixed in to give it more personality

    Fraser Fir

   • Slightly thinner than cedar garland

   • Most Christmas trees are fraser fir trees so this garland ties in well with Christmas trees for a consistent look

    White Pine

   • Thinner garland that is easy to wrap around mailbox poles etc.

   • Very economical garland

Decorator Tips

 - Garland will naturally fall in a certain direction. When you hang it on doorways, start the garland from the center and drape it down each side so the garland falls correctly. This way, you don't see the underside of the garland.

 - To get the look you see in the magazines, you can double up your garland

 - Use sprigs of berries or pinecones to help fill out your garland and give it character

 - If you want to add lights to your garland, make sure you use a lights with a green cord so its camouflaged

 - We have a guide at Pike Nurseries that helps you determine how much you need for things like your front door, mantel, etc.

• Keep Garland Fresh

The key to keeping greenery fresh is maintaining moisture in the stems and leaves of the plant

 - When you get your garland home, soak it in water over night.

 - Completely submerge garlands in a large galvanized tub or use your bathtub

 - Once the greenery has soaked overnight, spray it with an anti-transparent like tree preserve

Plants naturally lose water through their stems and leaves through a process called transpiration.

-  By using an anti-transparent, these pores are sealed and water loss is minimized

-  Wait a few hours after treatment before you begin decorating
