Graffiti Becoming A Big Headache For Rittenhouse Store Owners

Graffiti Becoming A Big Headache For Rittenhouse Store Owners

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

One of Philly's most upscale neighborhoods is a major target for vandals. And store owners in Rittenhouse Square say they're sick of it!

Dr. Suzanne Steele showed FOX 29 the latest urban artwork to deface the advertising in front of her medical practice and home on the 300 block of South 16th street.

She says it happened Sunday night, and when she checked her surveillance camera video, she found a guy hidden under a hoodie, with what she believes to be a can of spray paint in one hand, and a cell phone camera in the other.

Her place has been vandalized half-a-dozen times in the past eight years.

"What is it like to have to deal with this nonsense?" Steele explained. "It's very time consuming. We have to clean it up. We have to pay for the damages. I don't want my insurance rates to go up, so I just bear the cost myself."

Deli manager Steve Han says that even with his security cameras, it's nearly impossible to catch the vandals and make them pay.

"It's ongoing. Every day," said Han. "We paint that over... by maybe tomorrow, there'll be somebody there, you know, doing their artwork."

Back at the doctor's office, an employee helps Suzanne salvage their sign, scrubbing off the latest amateur artwork and wondering why life in the city has to be such a hassle.

"When you have small children like I do, you want to walk out and feel like your neighborhood is safe and friendly. And this doesn't feel friendly and it really doesn't feel safe," reflected Suzanne.

Some of the bolder vandals even posted pictures of their graffiti online for their friends and followers to see.  Suzanne and her neighbors are so fed up, that they are talking about posting a reward for information that lands these "artists" behind bars.

Insurance policies have rules governing what's covered and what's not. Generally, they make sense. The rules are designed to prevent unreasonable costs from being passed along to the insurer, and by extension to other insurance customers. But listen to Sheree Kober's story.
