Mandela memorial set up at Charles. H. Wright museum

Thousands of people from all over the area come to the Charles H. Wright museum each year for a lesson in African American culture and history. The museum houses what some say is among the 10 must-see exhibits anywhere.

Now, many more are expected to come here in the next couple days to say goodbye to an anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela. Mandela died at the age of 95 on December 5.

"What he means to people is just immeasurable, actually, and so to have a tribute to him today and have people remember him is really, really important," says Juanita Moore, president and CEO of the museum.

This memorial for Mandela was put up in the museum's rotunda on Friday morning in honor of the President's passing. It includes a video clip from his trip to the Detroit area in 1990, a South African flag and a card signed by hundreds for Mandela's 70th birthday. The museum's founder and namesake tried to deliver the card to Mandela several times but without luck.

"He once heard [Mandela] was in Cincinnati, and got in his car and he was going to take this big thing in the car to Cincinnati. And he got there just after Mandela left, so, it wasn't to be sent I guess," remembers Dr. Roberta Wright.

Rosa Parks lye in state in this very rotunda, as did former Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young. The museum is now working to broadcast Mandela's funeral here, as well.
His name will also eventually be added to the museum's genealogy ring.
