Princeton begins meningitis B vaccinations

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Princeton University has started its mass vaccination of students to try to stop an outbreak of type B meningitis.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention meningitis expert Thomas Clark says that shortly after vaccinations began at noon Monday, scores of students were in line and some had received the dose.

The Ivy League school has experienced an unusual outbreak of type B meningococcal disease, which can be life threatening.

Even though the vaccine isn't approved in the US yet, the Food and Drug Administration is allowing for its limited use at Princeton.

Officials say the vaccine will be made available on campus from Dec. 9th through the12th.

The second dose will be administered in February.

Seven Princeton students and one student visitor have been infected by the bacterial illness since March.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that students living in dorms and certain employees receive the new vaccine.
