Delaware Residents Bracing For Another Snowstorm

Delaware Residents Bracing For Another Snowstorm

Posted: Updated:
NEWARK, Del. -

Sunday's snow snuck up on all of us and caught us by surprise, especially drivers.

Whether you were in the city or the suburbs, navigating the roads was no fun! Many were caught out in the elements for hours stuck in traffic.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reported live Monday night from Newark, Del., where residents are bracing for yet another storm.

Much of Sunday's winter wonderland had melted by Monday morning. Students at the University of Delaware trudged through the snow-turned-slush to get to classes.

But for others, the surprise storm that dumped more than 6 inches of snow on Newark was less fun and more of a frustration during finals week.

No school was a cause for celebration for local high school students taking advantage of a snow day.

Sleds and shovels were flying off shelves at the National 5 & Dome Shop. All day there was a constant flow of customers coming in to buy sleds.

For others, the cleanup continued Monday.

Now, the big question: Could students have another snow day Tuesday? Rough predictions estimate several more inches could fall over the Delaware Valley.

DelDOT crews are preparing for an early morning of salting and plowing and they're advising drivers allow extra time for the morning commute.

"Our trucks need to get out there and do our work," DelDOT's Bill Thatcher said. "So, if you can slow down, take your time, give them space to do their job, it'll make it easier for everybody."

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, Mayor Michael Nutter says the city will be ready for the second round of wintry weather coming tomorrow.

The mayor says the streets department is preparing for another snowy day.

Crews will head out starting at midnight, salting first, with plowing to begin later in the day.

Nutter says having one storm on top of another can make treating the roads difficult, but city crews can handle it.
