PennDOT Predicts Tuesday Storm Will Mean Lots Of Plowing

NORRISTOWN, Pa. -

"It was all of a sudden. I'm lying in there watching the Eagles game and the next thing you know it's a blizzard," said Reggie Collins, who isn't taking any chances after Sunday's storm unexpectedly brought more than expected.

"I always get plenty of salt down," he said as he coated his driveway and sidewalk outside his Norristown home.

Collins wants to make sure he has no problem getting out of the driveway for work Tuesday. But he knows the roads will be a more difficult challenge after the previous storm and hectic commute.

"It took me a good hour and 15 to 20 minutes. Normally it takes me about 45 minutes to get to South Jersey," said a frustrated Collins.

PennDOT is right now working to get ahead of the storm. Crews stocked and loaded up Monday night although PennDOT's 450 trucks won't go out until go out until early Tuesday morning.

"The storm difference on Sunday was that it was a spreading storm and were going to be utilizing salt throughout the whole operation," PennDOT's Nick Martino said. "This is different. We're going to get on there the first two hours which is when we always say is the key to the storm. We want to make sure nothing bonds to the roadway."

Still, two neighbors out walking Monday evening said they don't plan on going anywhere during the storm.

"When the weather is like this we'd rather stay inside the house. We don't go on the street. It's dangerous," said Ester Alvarez.

Her retired neighbor George McMullen said if he or his wife have to go out he's ready now. He just put on snow tires he delayed putting on his car for months.

"We kept saying we'll put them on next week or we'll put them on later. Maybe it won't snow. Last night it snowed and I ran out today and I put them on," laughed George.

PennDOT says drivers should expect lots of trucks to be on the road during rush hour as they switch from salting to plowing. They advise drivers to stay at least six car lengths away from trucks.
