CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela will be held later this week in Chicago.

A spokesman for the South African consul general's office says he expects a capacity crowd at Friday evening's memorial on Chicago's South Side.

The event is being held at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters, which can hold about 1,000 mourners.

Friday's service is set to begin at 7 p.m. and is being billed as a celebration of Mandela's life. It will feature religious leaders from a variety of faiths and is one of a number of similar memorials being held around the country.

Mandela died last week at age 95.
