Obamacare could affect Georgia fire departments

Obamacare could affect Georgia fire departments

Posted: Updated:
PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -

Some Georgia fire departments have told their firefighters they must cut their hours due to the new healthcare law.

Peachtree City Fire Chief Joe O'Conor said more than half of his 143 person staff is part-time and volunteer firefighters.  It remains to be seen what will happen to those volunteers due to restrictions from the Affordable Care Act, known by some as Obamacare.

"Right now we have a few that are able to give more than 24 hours, more than 30 hours in the course of a week or more than 30 hours in the course of a week," O'Conor said. "Should that interpretation be decided, then we would have to revisit how often they would be allowed to volunteer, which would really be a shame considering they are essentially giving us their service for that nominal cost."

A bill is in Congress trying to make sure that the ACA will not have a negative effect on volunteer firefighters.
