Four Macomb Co. fire departments considering mega-merger

(WJBK) -

Clinton Twp., Mt. Clemens, Sterling Heights and Harrison Twp. are discussing a deal to combine fire departments, allowing a sharing of resources and financial savings to make the crews more efficient.

The cities are conducting a study now to determine if the joint fire department would be a success. The state has pledged a $50,000 grant to help fund that study.

"We talk about consolidation - it's the future, something that probably should have been done a long time ago. Here in Macomb Co. you've got all these fire unions and fire officers saying 'We need to think about this, there's good potential.' So, why not do a study?" says Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel.

The study could take up to a year.
