Horrifying moments behind the wheel of a car as a 45-year-old woman was forced at gunpoint to drive around Detroit along with her 11-year-old daughter. Police say a carjacker approached them when the woman stopped to get gas on Livernois. She had just left Ferndale where her sister owns a business.

"About ten minutes later our business owner got a telephone call from her sister, her sister was sounding panicky and nervous and said she needed to meet at the Foodland grocery store parking lot here in Ferndale and to bring her $200 - it was for her daughter," Lt. William Wilson from the Ferndale Police Department says.

Confused but anxious to help her sister in distress, the woman drove there then got another call to meet them at a remote location in Detroit. The meeting took place and the money was turned over.

"She saw that her sister was in her own vehicle with the girl also in the car, and she could see the silhouette through the tinted windows of a man in the back and she heard the man directing her sister what to do," says Lt. Wilson.

At this point, the business owner went to Ferndale police who contacted AT&T to trace the victim's cell phone. Police say during the 11 hours the 45 year old woman was sexually assaulted and the suspect also tried to assault the young girl.

"According to our victim, during this entire ordeal, he was smoking crack cocaine and demanding money from them," Lt. Wilson adds.

Around 5 a.m. another call came with another location to hand over cash -- and that's when police moved in.

"We had unmarked cars go in to the area using AT&T's intelligence as to where the car was traveling. They were giving us regular updates as to the location of the car," according to Lt. Wilson.

The ordeal finally came to an end here at Harper and Chalmers. Police rescued the mother and daughter and the suspect took off. Detroit police chased him and eventually caught him hiding in the basement of a house on Phillip Street.

"It was our uniformed officers, with a zeal and relentless follow up, that were able to bring the suspect into custody," says Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

Chief Craig says when officers first encountered the 28 year old suspect from Detroit he had a gun and was holding onto the 11 year old. Chief Craig praised the officers for using restraint and not trying to shoot.

I spoke to the victim's family by phone. They tell me the mother and daughter are resting after being checked out at the hospital. The suspect could be arraigned as early as this weekend.
