GWB lane closures amid retribution allegations

GWB lane closures amid retribution allegations

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM - For the fifth time in two months, several lanes of the George Washington Bridge were shut down for repairs.

On Monday, emergency work on the New Jersey-bound upper roadway that began in the morning extended through the evening commute.

Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes into the Garden State, but delays were massive. It took some drivers several hours to make it across the span.

The closed lanes were reopened Monday night.

Crews have been working to replace steel under the upper roadway as part of a five-year plan to improve the 80-year-old bridge.

Port Authority officials say the work is nearly complete.

The latest round of emergency repairs comes as the inspector general of the Port Authority investigates allegations of political retribution involving the mayor of Fort Lee and Gov. Chris Christie.

Democrats have been holding hearings into unannounced lane closures on the GWB that took place on September 8.

The Port Authority said they were closed for a traffic study.

But several New York State officials say the closures were ordered to punish the mayor for not supporting Christie.
