Man shot on Safe Passage route in Woodlawn

A man was shot on a Chicago Public Schools Safe Passage route Friday afternoon in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood.

The man, 33, was standing in the 400 block of East 63rd Street when he was approached and shot by a male, believed to be between ages 17 and 20, said police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.

The 33-year-old sustained gunshot wounds to his neck and buttocks, Zala said. He took himself to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where he was in "stable" condition, but was then transported to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where his condition is unknown.

The incident happened a block away from Dulles School of Excellence, 6311 S. Calument Ave., and is on a Safe Passage route, according to the Chicago Public Schools website.
