Clarifying Obamacare Deadlines

Clarifying Obamacare Deadlines

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11) As not to confuse you, THE DEADLINE FOR OBAMACARE IN CALIFORNIA IS OVER. Sorry, for shouting, but it ended last night at midnight (Monday night, Dec. 23rd) with promises from Covered California officials that if you started enrolling before midnight they would "help you over the finish line" today. But, you can not enroll today in California.

In other states, however, the deadline is midnight tonight (Tuesday, Dec. 24th) as extended by the Obama Administration. The extension was the result of software put into the problem-plagued system in case there was a surge in applications. There was such a surge and the software kicked in as planned. Again, though, the opportunity to get coverage in California starting January 1st has ended.

That doesn't mean you can't get health coverage. You can. The open enrollment period is until March 31st. Enroll by the 15th of January or February the coverage will begin February 1st or March 1st respectively. If purchased by March 31st coverage begins April 15th. If you're not covered after March 31st you will receive a penalty of $95 per adult & $47.50 per child or 1% of you annual household income whichever is greater.

In 2015, that goes up to $325 per adult and $162.50 per child or 2% whichever is greater. In 2016, $695 and $347.50 per child or 2.5%, again, whichever is greater.

So, missed the deadline here in California? You still have time. You just won't have your coverage begin January 1st like those who did.
