Mom thanks rescuers after ambulance birth

GREAT NECK, NY (AP) - A baby born on the way to a Long Island hospital on Christmas Eve is doing fine, and so is her surprised mom.

Karen Hollander and her family thanked rescuers at a news conference Wednesday at North Shore Manhasset Hospital.

The 40-year-old mother of four sons wasn't due to have her first daughter for two more weeks. She was running errands Tuesday when contractions started.

She started driving to the hospital but realized she had to pull over. She called 911 from a bank parking lot in Great Neck.

Nassau County Police and an ambulance soon arrived and rushed Hollander toward the hospital.

But baby Alexandra was in a rush, too. She was born in the ambulance just 14 minutes after Hollander felt the first contraction.

Hollander says her daughter "wanted to make a grand entrance."
