Study: Atlanta driving down 12% since 2005

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

One new study shows for the first time since World War II fewer people in the country are driving.

In Atlanta, per-person driving miles are down nearly 12% since 2005. More people now take transit or even bike to work.

The group looked at 100 cities across the nation and found Atlanta has the 4th highest drop in driving rates.

Leaders say, since the end of World War II, driving has been increasing and increasing and now we're starting to see the reversal of that trend. The report looks at census and traffic numbers, along with surveys. It shows more people are saving money and putting fewer miles on their vehicles.

More people telecommuting, with the increase in technology more people can work from home.
People are increasingly taking their bicycle to work, taking transit and rail. On the surface it may seem like another effect of the poor economy, but experts say the numbers started changing three years before the recession.

Some groups believe numbers like these mean Atlanta needs to invest more in making the city more bike and transit friendly and less money on new roads.
