Tradition Carries On: Mummers March On Broad Street

PHILADELPHIA -

Bright colors, feathers, sequins – here in Philly, it means just one thing: It's New Year's Day and the Mummers are strutting down Broad Street.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reported live from the heart of the parade Wednesday.

All day and all night, they were strutting their stuff down Broad Street for the 114th year. It was a Philadelphia tradition at its best!

Donning bright costumes with larger-than-life props, all 41 Mummers clubs showed up with unbeatable energy.

They boogied down Broad Street in magical costumes rich in design, rich in tradition and – like everything else in Philadelphia –passionate from head to toe.

It was a party in the streets as well as a party on the sidewalk. People packed the parade route.

Some had better seats than others. Joyce joined one crew whose tradition has been to bring a couch to the parade for the last 25 years.

Families bore the New Year's Day chill to carry on a century-old tradition.

And even people like Shaibal Roy, who moved here from Germany three years ago, appreciate this unique New Year's Day parade.

"This is the culture of Philadelphia. It's tradition, and the people make it successful," Roy said.
