NY highways reopen, but hazards remain

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Declaring a state of emergency, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged motorists to stay off the roads Thursday and Friday. He ordered the closure of the Long Island Expressway in Nassau and Suffolk counties, I-87 (NYS Thruway) south of Albany, and all of I-84 at midnight into the morning Friday. Although the roads have been plowed, treated, and reopened, they still may be dangerous for motorists because of ice.

Shortly before 5 a.m. it was announced that the LIE would remain closed until at least 8 a.m. for snow removal. The LIE reopened as anticipated.

The vehicle ban for passenger cars was lifted at 5 a.m. for the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) between Exit 24 in Albany and the New York City border.

The commercial vehicle ban was lifted at 8 a.m.

Much of the tristate area is under winter storm warnings or blizzard warnings.

President Barack Obama is going on a fundraising sweep through New York and Rhode Island as he continues to help Democrats raise money for November's elections. Obama headlines three events on Friday. Two in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from the 2012 campaign season.
