Illinois schools comply with concealed carry law

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

When students return to school Monday, parents and students may notice a sign that is going up on school buildings across the state.

Beginning Jan. 5, firearm owners in Illinois can apply for a license to carry a concealed gun. The Firearm Concealed Carry Act identifies 25 areas where concealed firearms are prohibited, including schools.

The law requires schools to post a sign provided by the Illinois State Police that states the carrying of firearms into the building is prohibited.

Aurora-based Indian Prairie School District 204 spent winter break posting the signs at the entrances used by the public, said Janet Buglio, executive director of communication services for the school district. She added that Indian Prairie notified the parents and public about the installation because people will notice the signs posted on the buildings when students return after winter break, and the district didn't want people to get alarmed.

Naperville School District 203 Director of Communications Susan Rice said signs are being posted at all public entrances at district schools and a message will go out to parents notifying them of the law and the presence of the new signs.

Other districts were in compliance before the new year.

Community Unit School District 300 had the signage posted prior to winter break, according to Allison Strupeck, District 300 director of communication services.

As required by the law, the sign itself must have a white background and a depiction of a handgun in black ink with a red circle around it and a diagonal slash across the handgun (the "no firearms" symbol). The symbol must be 4 inches in diameter, and the entire sign must measure 4 inches by 6 inches in size.
