Monsignor Lynn Expected To Leave Police Custody Friday

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Monsignor William Lynn has been released from prison in the Scranton area, but is still in custody. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia helped post his bail.

Lynn is the first U.S. church official ever convicted for his handling of abuse claims. An appeals court overturned his guilty verdict.

For the first time in 18 months, he left prison in northeastern Pennsylvania on Thursday morning.

FOX 29's Jeff Cole spoke with Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams, who remains outraged over the court's decision and says he'll work to put Lynn back in jail.

An attorney for Lynn says he'll probably be released to the custody of a family member but won't say where he will live.

Lynn was the point person for complaints that priests were molesting children from the early 90s to the mid-2000s. His child endangerment conviction was overturned.

After leaving prison on Thursday, Lynn was taken by Philadelphia sheriffs to a city jail to be fitted with an electronic monitoring device. That's where he remained early Thursday night.

The archdiocese has been in the crosshairs of city prosecutors since 2002, when the priest-abuse scandal broke in Boston.

And Williams said the church is sending a bad message to victims of priest sex-abuse.

"As a parishioner, just personally, I'm disgusted that money that I put into the collection box paid to bail him out at a time the church is closing schools, closing churches. But they have the money to bail him out?" Williams said. "Again, it sends a wrong message to the victims of child sex abuse."

Lynn remains a priest in good standing with the church, and could return to ministry. He last served as pastor of St. Joseph's in Downingtown.
