Montebello Hospital Settles for $200K in 'Patient Dumping' Case

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (FOX 11 / AP) - The Los Angeles city attorney has announced a $200,000 settlement with a hospital that dropped off a patient on Skid Row without making arrangements with a shelter.

City Attorney Mike Feuer says the agreement between the city and Beverly Hospital in Montebello is part of a larger crackdown against the practice of "patient dumping," which Feuer called "inhumane and intolerable.

Feuer's office alleged that the Beverly Community Hospital Association failed to perform a proper screening of a dependent adult with an emergency medical condition, failed to stabilize and transfer the patient then improperly discharged them to Skid Row.

Feuer says the hospital has cooperated with his office, agreeing to $200,000 in civil penalties and adopting changes to its medical and psychiatric screening process.
