Illinois residents ready to apply for concealed carry licenses

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Article 2 gun range in Lombard is normally busy on the weekends, but on Saturday, people flocked to the facility to shop for guns and practice how to use them.

Starting Sunday, the Illinois State Police will begin to accept electronic applications for a concealed carry license.

You do have a lot more people that are coming and asking questions, certainly the website has gotten a lot of hits to answer questions about concealed carry. We've got a few different instructors that use us for a home range," Barry Soskin, who owns Article 2 gun range and gun shop, said.

Soskin expected the state to be flooded with applications for people who want to carry a concealed weapon.

Illinois State Police will take those applications and it may take up to 90 days to approve or deny one as long as a person is willing to submit their fingerprints. If not, the application process could take up to 120 days.

"There has been other things that the state has timeframes on that they aren't as prompt as I would like, but I just know what the ordinance says," Soskin added.

For gun owners who prepared to apply for their carry license, this day had been a long one coming.

"Being the last to get it is, about time, sure, but constitutionally I think it was a matter of time anyway," one gun owner said.

In order to apply, one must be at least 21 years old, have 16 hours of firearms training and present your Firearm Identification Owners card, just to name a few.

Many of these people could be allowed to carry a concealed weapon by April.

"I like it personally as a gun owner, you just feel safer that if you need to you can carry it," one person applying for concealed carry added.

The application must be filed electronically with Illinois State Police and if you plan on submitting your fingerprints, you must go to a professional regulation fingerprint vendor.
