LAPD Investigating First Homicide of the New Year

LOS ANGELES (FOx 11 / CNS) - A 46-year-old man on a bicycle was fatally wounded in South Los Angeles this morning, a homicide lieutenant said.

The shooting occurred at 12:30 a.m. at Main Street and Century Boulevard, said South Bureau Homicide Lt. Jeff Nolte.

It was the first murder of 2014 in the South Bureau, Nolte said.

"Someone heard the shot, no one saw it," he said.

The victim was identified by police as Don Jackson.

He was riding a bicycle when he was shot and collapsed in the street.

"A couple of minutes later, a passerby notified the fire department and he was transported to a hospital where he died from his wounds," Nolte said.

Detectives canvassed the area where they located the "ear-witness," he said. "No eye-witnesses."

Investigators were also looking for surveillance cameras on commercial and residential buildings. The motive for the shooting was unknown, Nolte said.
