CPS to remain closed Tuesday due to extreme weather

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago Public Schools will remain closed Tuesday, schools chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett announced Monday, after strong winds and record cold plunged Chicago into a dangerous deep freeze.

Byrd-Bennett said, based on the severity of the weather, she's confident that closing schools for the second straight day is the right decision, one backed by the mayor.

"This is some of the most extreme weather we've seen in the city of Chicago in decades," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said at a press conference Monday afternoon.

The temperature at O'Hare Airport hit minus-16 at 7:51 a.m. Monday, and Tuesday temperatures are expected to top out at 5 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

CPS tweeted this message via @ChiPubSchools Monday afternoon:

"All CPS schools closed tomorrow, Jan. 7 due to extreme weather. Stay inside, stay warm. Recorded updates 773-553-1000, 773-553-3100."
