Snow removal, trash pickup and respite center information for Detroit

(WJBK) -

Private contractors and city crews are once again providing much-needed relief to Detroit residents. The contractors are plowing 1,800 miles of residential streets and 40 city crews are also working around the clock on the main roads.

Mayor Mike Duggan says, on day six of his job, he's pleased with the progress.

"We are plowing a 10-foot strip down the middle of the street. I think our residents know you're going to need to shovel to get from your driveway to the street," he says.

In this dangerous cold, Duggan says road salt will not work so drivers should use extreme caution until temperatures rise. Fox 2 saw plenty of cars spinning their tires, and plenty of people stuck.

One Detroit resident, Juanita Holston, experienced the downside of plowing firsthand. In effort to get the snow off the road those plows are trapping in a lot of drivers.

"I came out here earlier, and I gave up. And then I said, well, I've got to do it because I have to go to work,"  a e tells Fox 2's Robin Schwartz.

In the midst of big dig, trash pickup is also underway. Crews on the west side of the city are finally getting to last week's trash. Duggan says by Monday night last week's trash routes will finally be complete - just in time to start all over again.

"We're going to have to continue to operate the garbage trucks 24 hours a day because the same kind of problem, getting down the streets quickly that was causing a problem after the first snowstorm, is even more so limiting us today," Duggan says.

To help those in need, the city is also opening three respite centers.

City Respite Centers
Due to the severe cold, Mayor Duggan urged residents to limit their time out of doors and to always let a friend or relative know where they will be all times if they will be traveling alone. To help provide residents with indoor opportunities to take shelter from the weather, the city is announcing the hours of operation of the following respite centers, which will be open from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. daily beginning Monday, January 6th:

Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center
8431 Rosa Parks Blvd.
Detroit, MI 48206

Farwell Recreation Center
2781 Outer Drive
Detroit, MI 48234

Butzel Family Center
7737 Kercheval
Detroit, MI 48214
