CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Clayton County police are investigating if cold weather played a role in the death of a 66-year-old man.

Arthur "Gary" Pelham was found dead outside of a home on Whaley Lake Lane on Monday night. His caregiver told FOX 5 that Pelham got dressed and went outside to wait for a senior center to pick him up on Monday morning. Hours later, the caregiver and neighbor Petiri Jones' stepson spotted the disabled veteran in distress outside on the patio.

"He said, ‘Someone needs to call 911 because the neighbor is lying face down with his pants around his ankles,'" said Jones.

A second neighbor called 911. If Jones and the caregiver's suspicions are correct, Pelham could have been outside in these dangerous temperatures for 10 hours.

"I feel so bad for him. I have my animals in the house, so I know he is cold," Jones said. "He might have hypothermia, maybe he passed out. He's an older fellow."

Clayton County police canvassed the area looking for answers. Officers asked neighbors if they saw Pelham walking around in the sub-freezing temperatures. Jones said he often saw Pelham wondering the neighborhood.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Pelham is survived by his 90-year-old mother, who reportedly lives in Carroll County.
