Freezing temperatures cause pipes to burst across metro Atlanta

ATLANTA -

Record low temperatures caused pipes to burst throughout metro Atlanta on Tuesday.

Gracie Lamar said her home of 23 years was devastated after a pipe in the ceiling froze and burst.

"I didn't know whether to cry, turn around and go back out, or what to do because I never saw anything like this before," Lamar said.

Lamar's living room destroyed and her house could be a total loss. She said that she was just happy no one was home when the pipe burst.

In Newnan, a sprinkler system at a daycare froze and ruptured. Monica Peart has owned the International Academy of Newnan for about five months.  She said they took all the necessary precautions to avoid the situation, but just couldn't compete with Mother Nature.

"Made sure the water was on, made sure the heat was on. Still, you know, frozen pipes," Peart said.

While it may take weeks to get things back to normal, there is one thing she's thankful for.

"The thing I'm grateful for is there were no kids here today because that could have just been a real extreme situation with, you know, kids in the building," Peart said.
