Family warns others after hiring no-show snow plowing company

(WJBK) -

After they got this fancy flier in the mail and a blast of winter was on the way, Franci Hirsch and her husband, Greg, of West Bloomfield decided this was the year they were going to hire a snow removal company. Unfortunately, they apparently chose the wrong one.

Franci says when they first called Five Star Landscaping and Snow Removal workers had no problem coming out right away to have her sign this contract, stake out the driveway and collect her check on December 13, 2013.

"That night it actually snowed. The next day they did not come back, and the day after that they did not come back," says Franci.

Looking closely at the fine print, the company promises automatic service. But Franci claims it was like pulling teeth to get the plows to come back. And then this past weekend was the snow storm that dumped several inches across metro Detroit.

"Not only did they not show, but there's been no response. I'm out $215 - actually $235 now," she says.

The family has called, left several messages and emails but have yet to hear back from the owner, Karl Bolin. Fox 2 tried to track the business owner down at his last known address in Bloomfield Hills, down the street at his parents and where the snow plowing business is said to be located. A house in Waterford Twp. is the address listed on the contract. However, when Fox 2's Taryn Asher arrived at the address no one was home but the garage door was open, revealing a sign for Cedar Treaters, the other company owned by Bolin.

Several unhappy customers have posted their complaints about both companies online. In fact, according to the Better Business Bureau, Five Star, which is not accredited or in good standing, has had nine registered complaints. Five of those have been over the last year.

That's information the Hirsch's, who were forced to hire someone else to dig them out, wished they had known beforehand.

"In retrospect, check your references. This was definitely a mistake on our part, but, we saw the snow was coming, at the time my husband was out of town, we felt just moving fast, what hard could it be?" Franci says.
