Body found at Greektown parking lot after 2 teen girls shot at in Eastpointe

A body was found Friday morning at the parking structure for Greektown Casino. The body appears to be that of a man who, just earlier that morning, is said to have shot at two teenage girls in Eastpointe, hitting and injuring one in the leg.

Around 7 a.m. two cousins, ages 13 and 15, were walking to school down Firwood near Nine Mile and Hayes when a car pulled up. The man inside the car started shooting at them.

Florence and Raymond Miller show Fox 2's Amy Lange the bullet holes in their home and their car after the shooting.

One neighbors helped the two girls. "You could actually see them laying in the snow. The one girl was kind of laying in the snow and the other girl was standing there and kind of frozen and screaming and basically just scared to death," remembers Anthony Sievert. He woke up to the gunshots and saw the girls trying to hide in his neighbor's backyard. He grabbed his gun and went to help them.

"I basically carried her over here to this snowbank next to the car itself so that way we could have the car for a little bit of cover," Sievert says.

The 13-year-old was shot in the leg. The gunman, identified as 32-year-old Lance Cottrell of Waterford, was being investigated for sexually assaulting the 15-year-old a number of weeks ago. After the shooting he drove to the parking garage of the Greektown Casino where he died by suicide.

"We got a call this morning, thought it was a shooting at the casino. We came here, we found out after reviewing the tapes that it was a suicide," says Capt. Conway Petty from the Detroit Police Department.

Amy Lange reports the 15-year-old girl and Cottrell met online. Waterford police are not releasing details of that investigation.

The school the girls attend sent home a note to parents explaining the situation.
