DPD Officer hurt in hit and run accident

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Sheets of ice coating the roads on Monday morning in Detroit lead a Detroit police officer to respond to an accident at Davison and Oakman on the city's west side. While the officer was writing up a report, another car lost control and hit him. The driver took off.

"[The driver] lost control. He ended up striking the officer and pinning him in between the car and his car," says Lawrence Purifoy, a Detroit police officer.

The officer was taken to the hospital but is now recovering at home.

Police say the hit-and-run driver made a stop at a nearby gas station after driving away from the scene. Police are reviewing surveillance video there, hoping to gather a description of the suspect. In the meantime, police believe they have a description of the vehicle.

"The vehicle will have front-end damage. That's all that we have right now. It's going to be a black, GM-type vehicle, possibly an Impala. So that's what we're looking for now,"

The officer injured in the accident is a 12-year veteran.
