KISSIMMEE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Police said a man threw his own 2-year-old son off a second-story balcony of a motel in Kissimmee Tuesday morning and then jumped off himself. He and the child survived the fall but with serious injuries.
Juan Pablo Maradiaga, 41, will be charged with attempted first-degree murder once his condition improves and he can be transported to the Osceola County Jail.
The child's mother, Rosa Fabian Lizardo, spent most of Tuesday and Tuesday night at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where the boy is being treated and in stable condition.
Lizardo went to the scene of the crime Tuesday evening, the Budget Inn East. She talked to reporters before departing, expressing disbelief and shock.
"He loved his son, and I know he did. I just don't have the answer," said Lizardo. "I want him to answer me, the reason why."
Police say Maradiaga confessed to throwing his son off the balcony, and they say motel surveillance video shows the crime in progress. The father and toddler were both rushed to hospitals.
"My baby is fine, thank God! He's a miracle baby. He's a miracle," Lizardo said. "He's fine. Baby has a lump in his forehead."
Lizardo said she and the boy's father are separated and he was watching the child on Monday evening while she was at work.
"I am a working mother," she explained. "We are separated, but we try to, he can see his son and stuff like that."
Hotel owners said Maradiaga stayed here for two weeks with no problems, until now. They said they got to know Rosa over the last two weeks and they like her a lot.
Police said they arrested Maradiaga in 2010 for domestic violence. He had major surgery on his foot Tuesday and will be taken to the jail when he recovers.
