KABUL, Afghanistan (WJBK) -

A local woman is one of 21 people killed in a Taliban bombing attack at a popular restaurant in Kabul, Afghanistan. Basra Hassan of Hamtramck, believed to be in her late 50's, was a nutrition specialist for UNICEF who worked in countries around the world.

Her colleagues call her a true humanitarian, someone who was passionate and dedicated to making the world a better place. UNICEF confirms Hassan died Friday night along with a doctor and 19 others when a Taliban bomber blew himself up outside a popular restaurant; gunmen also opened fire inside.

One worker says he escaped by running to the roof where he hid behind a chimney for hours. The restaurant owner reportedly died in a gun battle trying to shoot back at the attackers. Afghan officials are calling the incident one of the deadliest attacks since the start of the Afghan war 13 years ago.

"These sorts of attacks which focus, and which target civilian locations are unacceptable," said Ari Gaitanis, a United Nations spokesperson in Afghanistan. "We call for their immediate halt. We emphasize these can be described and they are, gross violations of international humanitarian law."

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the mass killing that ended Hassan's life and so many others. Another victim is reportedly from Chicago. According to her Linked-In account, Hassan earned a Master's Degree at Eastern Michigan University and started working with UNICEF in 2005. The organization promotes the rights and well being of children.

"These colleagues were an integral part of the UNICEF team in Afghanistan and the larger community of international staff... who are dedicated to improving the lives of others and building a better, safer world for all. The loss of our colleagues is therefore not only a personal one; it is a loss to that indispensable cause. We honor their sacrifice, and deeply mourn their deaths," a UNICEF spokesperson said in a statement.
