Record Breaking Number Of Volunteers Honor Dr. King During Day of Service

Posted: Updated:

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day thousands of people are honoring the civil rights leader through service and as FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reports, a local service event had record breaking turnout.

Girard College was overflowing with citizen action this Martin Luther King Day.

Dozens of tables were set up in the gymnasium with donated goods and service projects for the 19th annual MLK Day of Service celebration.

"Today we're creating a huge rainbow butterfly for a garden in north Philadelphia, "Kim Niemela of Cosa Cosa Art at Large said.

In some cases these people are giving back to others who gave our country the priceless gift of freedom.

This year, a record 125,000 volunteers throughout the Delaware Valley stepped up to make a difference as the largest event of its kind nationwide according to organizer Todd Bernstein.

"We're highlighting Dr. King's activism of education and the fact that there is a fiscal crisis in Philadelphia's schools, "Bernstein said.

Education is a major focus as this year's theme is the 60th Anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court Decision desegregating America's schools.

"We're assembling massive amounts of food supplies and books and computers that will be distributed to the most undeserved Philadelphia Public Schools," Bernstein said.

College Prep Workshops and a job fair are also included in this event to help build a stronger community.

Dr. King was not just a civil rights activist he was a champion of economic justice.

People who donated their time say they are helping to carry on Dr. King's legacy.

Even the Phillies Fanatic joined in as people of all backgrounds came together in service.

"Dr. King told us to live, to love, to laugh to come together," Rishona Harri of Abington Target Store said. "A lot of us wouldn't be where we are without getting some type of opportunity from other people."

This is a day that really makes people think about the values that Dr. King taught, the blue print speech being the best at what you can do.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
