Widow sues Cushingberry for mishandling inheritance, husband's classic cars

(WJBK) -

With a traffic stop, foreclosures and the possible loss of his law license, Detroit city councilman George Cushingberry Jr. has his hands full these days. Now a widow says Cushingberry cheated her out of her two classic cars.

Roxanne Hudson says that when her husband died she turned to her friend for legal help, George Cushingberry. Now she's suing him, accusing him of driving off with her inheritance.

______________

Larry Hudson was a man with many hobbies. He was a dee-jay. He dabbled in video production, creating this video for Cushingberry's 56th birthday, and he owned classic cars like this 1926 Oakland and this 1976 Coupe De Ville.

But when Hudson died two years ago he didn't leave a will. His cousin Cleo Wiley Hale told Roxanne Hudson that George Cushingberry could help.

The lawsuit claims Cushingberry said he could take care of Mr. Hudson's unpaid medical expenses, as well as funeral expenses here at the Swanson Funeral Home. But Mrs. Hudson now says that was a lie.

Roxanne Hudson says Cushingberry took her husband's prized cars for joyrides before selling them off - without giving her any money.

I tried giving Cushingberry a chance to respond to Hudson's allegations but nobody was at the council office and nobody was at the house.

Todd Perkins is Cushingberry's increasingly busy attorney. He says the councilman will eventually be vindicated.

ELRICK TO PERKINS: Does he deny ripping off a widow woman?
PERKINS: Absolutely! Absolutely he denies that! ... Let's judge him on what he's doing and looking forward into the future, as to what he does for the citizens.

Cushingberry's name has been coming up in a lot of the wrong places these days, but his lawyer says these legal entanglements have not stopped him from working hard for the people of Detroit.
