Artist Transforms Guns Into Instruments

It's hard to believe that guns could make such music.  Sound traveling through the barrels that were once used for bullets.

"It's almost like being a caveman, trying to blow and scratch and bang and see what kind of sounds could be made."

Each one is welded into something new and transformed in the hands of artist Pedro Reyes.

"Drilling holes you can turn a rifle into a flute," explains Reyes.

In some ways, instruments of change.

"The physical transformation of this metal also leads to a kind of social transformation," Reyes continues.

"I really like the idea of repurposing something so violent into something more artistic, I guess a little more peaceful," says Adam.

The exhibit at the University of South Florida comes amid controversy surrounding Florida's stand your ground law.

Reyes, says he is using art to transform what he calls "an instrument of death" into an instrument of life.

"The barrel of a shot gun if you cut it different lengths you have different notes." Reyes shows.

These instruments will be a part of a special performance at USF. One that will see performers engaging the audience, in a conversation about guns, violence, and the law.

"Legislative theater is about transformation to engage community to connect to each other," Arreola explains.
