Police Look For Links In Northeast Philly Delivery Driver Robberies

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

When 60 year old delivery driver Spiro Kote pulled up to this home on 6200 block of Kindred Street in Oxford Circle Tuesday night, little did he know armed suspects were lying in wait to ambush and rob him .

"Real nice fella, hard worker." Kote's friend Bruce Behrman told Fox 29. "Pray for him that's all, hope he pulls through. It's a real shocker."

Wednesday,Kote's friends and people who live near the crime scene wondered out loud why anyone would want to lure him to this abandoned location and then shoot the hardworking delivery driver, who sometimes works 7 days a aweek.

"Nobody lives there, it's just a shame," said Jude Law, who used to live in the home until recently.

"It's terrible, he's just working hard thats all you know," Behrman added.

Kote worked for the Panda Chinese take out restaurant on Bustleton Avenue just a few blocks away. Police say when he went to the door of this abandoned two story home that's up for sale, the suspects were waiting. They took the food delivery and shot him once in the chest with what police believe was a shot gun.

"It's happened before to other delivery drivers," Behrman said.

Investigators tell Fox 29 Kote is just the latest delivery driver robbed in this area since mid December. One driver was held up in the 1200 block of Mckinley, another just a block away on Hale Street and a third on Comly Street. They are now trying to determine if these robberies are connected.

"It's cold hearted. Cold, cold hearted," Paul added.

Behrman says Kote worked hard and was always on the move. He liked to play scratch off lottery games. Several scratch off tickets were still in the front seat of his car at the shooting scene with a food delivery he never got a chance to make. A menu and a hat lay in the snow near his Toyota Corolla.

"That's terrible. I just hope he pulls through, that's all," Behrman said.

"Working hard to get some money man, it's a shame," Paul said.

The victim was in critical condition after surgery. The owners of the restaurant where Kote worked told Fox 29 they were too shaken up to speak. No one answered the door at Kote's home.

Several delivery drivers told us today they are hesitant to make stops in certain areas and at certain homes. Some even carry licensed handguns to protect themselves.

So far police have no suspects in the robbery and shooting. Anyone with information should call Northeast Detectives at 215-686-3353.
