Airplane Flying From Dulles To Boston Makes Emergency Landing

NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DE -

A plane on its way to Boston makes an emergency landing in Delaware and we are getting an inside look at what passengers experienced onboard.

The midair scare happened shortly after the plane took off from Dulles International Airport.

People onboard the plane turned to social media even as the oxygen masks dropped to their seats.

"40 minute flight you're not thinking anything is going to happen and the oxygen masks dropped down," Shashi Bellamkonda said.

Bellamkonda says it was a surprise when passengers were notified about being diverted and making an emergency landing. The digital marketing executive shared photos of himself and a colleague and says they were mid-flight when he saw smoke and the oxygen masks came down.

"I am really amazed at how calm everyone was," Bellamkonda said.

The United Express Plane had taken off at 8:45 Wednesday morning from Dulles International Airport and was headed to Boston.

Officials say it was diverted to New Castle County Airport and landed safely just before 10am

"There was apparently a problem with oxygen generators on board as we understand it and that may have created a smoke condition," Airport Director Stephen Williams said.

Officials say there were 61 people onboard including 4-crew members. Passengers began tweeting out photos and a detail about what was happening almost immediately saying the plane was losing altitude. Once the plane landed 8 passengers decided not to continue to Boston with United and rented cars or took an Amtrak train instead.

"I'm really happy. It could of been worse and I feel like hopefully this will never happen to me again," Bellamkonda said.
