EVERGREEN PARK, Ill. (AP) - Illinois Treasurer and GOP candidate for governor Dan Rutherford is carrying on with his campaign a day after holding a news conference to talk about misconduct allegations that he says are politically motivated.

Rutherford met Saturday with a group of first responders in south suburban Chicago. For about an hour, he answered their questions on pensions, jobs and taxes. No one asked about the allegations, which have not been detailed publicly and which Rutherford says have no merit.

Rutherford said afterward he's not surprised the first responders wanted to discuss economic issues and not the allegations. Most of those in attendance were Chicago police and firefighters.

Chicago Police Lt. John Garrido, who invited Rutherford, says the first responders he chatted with after the candidate's appearance consider the allegations "mudslinging."
