ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Oakland University in suburban Detroit says a freshman has died following a weekend snowmobiling crash in Roscommon County.

The school said in a statement on its website that Eric Thomas Pauli died following the Sunday accident. His obituary said he was 18.

Pauli came to Oakland University from Dakota High School in Macomb County, outside Detroit. He was a member of the Golden Grizzlies Band. Band director Kenneth Kroesche says Pauli's "infectious enthusiasm and fun-loving personality were often displayed during performances."

MLive.com reports the crash happened in Lyon Township, about 165 miles northwest of Detroit. Undersheriff Ed Stern says Pauli was riding with others when one snowmobile tried to turn in front of another.

funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Friday at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Macomb Township.
