Ingrid Michaelson is simply irresistible in new video

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Staten Island native and current Brooklyn resident Ingrid Michaelson is back with a new single, a new album, and a tour.

The singer-songwriter has been getting some attention with the video for the new single, "Girls Chase Boys," which is a playful and thought-provoking riff on the late Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible." Ingrid's version features male models dolled up and dressed in drag, evoking the women dancing in Palmer's late 1980s classic, and several other visual homages to the original. (Ingrid's video also showcases female dancers.)

Known for her active sharing and interaction with her fans on social media, Ingrid delved into some of the background of the song and the video with a message on Facebook.

"Girls Chase Boys started out as a break up song but took on a deeper meaning as I continued writing," she wrote in her Facebook post. "More than just being about my experience, its focus shifted to include the idea that, no matter who or how we love, we are all the same. The video takes that idea one step further, and attempts to turn stereotypical gender roles on their head. Girls don't exclusively chase boys. We all know this! We all chase each other and in the end we are all chasing after the same thing: love. I hope you enjoy it! AHHH!"

The video has more than half a million views in less than a week. It has gotten attention from BuzzFeed, Entertainment Weekly (where it premiered online), Perez Hilton, The Washington Post, MTV.com, HuffPo, and elsewhere.

Ingrid's fifth album, "Lights Out" (Cabin 24/Mom+Pop), comes out April 15. She embarks on a 27-city tour the following week. She will play Terminal 5 in New York City on May 29.

Recorded in Los Angeles, New York, and Nashville, "Lights Out" features six producers and 10 cowriters, which Ingrid says is new for her.

"With every other record, I've always written all of the songs. I've worked with one producer. And we've stayed in one room," she says in a press release. "I've been such a control freak about my songs! But if you can get with the right person, there are ideas you could never come up with. It totally opens doors."

Ingrid grew up in the Stapleton section of Staten Island. She now lives in Brooklyn's Prospect Heights, where she shot footage for the lyric video for the new track "Wonderful Unknown." You might recognize glimpses of familiar scenery, including Prospect Park.

Ingrid's music was discovered on MySpace in 2006, which led to licensing deals for television shows ("Grey's Anatomy," "One Tree Hill," "Parenthood") and commercials (Old Navy and Google Chrome). That helped power her measurable independent success: more than 1 million albums and 5 million singles sold -- all on her own label.

(Ingrid has made several appearances on Good Day New York; watch one performance here. And click here to check out a story and slideshow from her 2012 benefit show for the Staten Island Museum.)
